3 Things (I Don't Hate about Miley Cyrus)3.3510

Daily News: (nydailynews.com)

Pity the poor teen idol.

Miley Cyrus, hugely successful star of “Hannah Montana,” whined to the Today show that “my mistakes are kind of a little bit harder because they are in front of millions and millions of people.”

The 16-year-old was likley referring to the brouhaha that erupted over her disrobing for photographer Annie Leibovitz in Vanity Fair in 2008. Miley has also sent out racy photos of herself to friends via her cell phone, which leaked onto the Internet.

Despite her growing pains in the public eye, Cyrus sees a silver lining.

“It does s–k to have to go through that. But also it makes you want to try harder the next time when I know that little girls look at me and say I’m their hero,” said Cyrus during a break in her four song live set on Friday’s Today show.

But her role model status hasn’t stopped Disney’s reigning queen from stirring up controversy.

Cyrus’s latest scandal-ette occurred when she performed her new hit “Party in the USA,” during which critics accused her of simulating pole dancing

–Jim Farber

Born November 23rd, 1992, Destiny Hope Cyrus has already lived a life that almost every teenage girl would dream to have. She has had her high points. Being the face of Hannah Montana, ranking #29 on Forbes Most Influential People in the World list, and dating a Jo-bro, to name a few. There have also been her low points, such as her graphic pictures taken with her dad for Vanity Fair.

Cyrus is a talented singer, author, songwriter, musician, and actress. A Renaissance woman at 16: not too shabby. She has been in numerous movies including High School Musical 2 and Hannah Montana, the movie. Also, she has been in a variety of television shows including; Hannah Montana and the Disney Channel Games. Miley has received many awards for her talents that include; Teen Choice Awards, Kid’s Choice Awards, and MTV movie awards. All in all, her career has been amazing: this young girl has already accomplished more than most entertainers will in a lifetime.

Even though Miley is an amazing artist, (who is also quite good looking) somehow people still find ways to rag on her. Some say she is too sexual or her music makes them want to scream, others simply state that she is ugly. Newsday.com stated that Miley was, “…a pole-dancing performance… (that) sent the wrong message to her tween-age fans.” It’s quite the contrary though; she is not to sexual for her audience: she is just having fun on stage: what is so bad about that? Why do people not like her voice, I mean there is even an “I Hate Miley Cyrus” fan club on YouTube with over 23,000 fans. Her music, people say, makes them want to scream. But people ignore the fact that her voice is one of the best today, its not synchronized like almost every other artist, but it’s the real deal. Just like the “I Hate Miley Cyrus” fan club on YouTube, there is another video called “Miley Cyrus is Ugly”, which is a total lie. Cyrus is not ugly, her body physique is fine the way it is, despite what people may say, it’s great the way it is.

So to all you Miley Cyrus haters, stop looking at her with your shallow narrow minded views, which are completely subjective, and start taking the objective view of her, which is full of talent, beauty, and someone I think of as the epitome of inspiring.

    nice brett i agree.
except her values are sometimes questionable. i mean provocatively dancing and then thanking God at the Teen Choice Awards… seriously? i mean you might have fun dancing on poles…if you’re a firefighter sliding down a pole to go save some innocent kids. But doing that on public tv wasn’t the most prudent thing to have done. i do realize she has her own personal beliefs but let’s at least not allude to sexual dance themes while she is looked up to by thousands of young children all over the world. Maybe even dancing with a puppy or something would be better…

See your a critic, I can see what your trying to say, but seriously it wasnt that provacative, she was having fun, if she danced with a puppy, the people would be to caught up in how cute the little puppy was and wouldnt pay attention to her, but if she does that dance, you better believe all eyes on her.

Brett: Next time you post on this site, please spellcheck/proofread/revise YOUR posts/comments/mindless banter.

Miley Cyrus is a blatantly contradictory figure in the celebrity sphere. I absolutely do not agree with the statement that she is a “Renaissance Woman.” This status takes time to develop, and though one may have been had a few catchy songs and have her own TV show, that does not by any means make her a moral role model for ANYONE, especially her target audience of teen and pre-teen girls. She’s been spotted nearly nude, in provocative poses, in pictures that she, not Vanity Fair took. Also, if you followed anything close to the news, you would know that there have been some rather suggestive e-mails that she sent, indicating that neither her nor the “Jo-Bro,” as you so fondly put it, are as “pure” as they claim. So no, she is not a a moral role model by any means, and calling her a “Renaissance Woman” is, frankly, an insult to society.

And if this article is actually a satire of the media/dedicated fans, and not a senseless piece of nothing, bravo. Though I really doubt that it is.

    Correct cam.
When in the public eye you do have to be extremely careful. One slip up could destroy your entire image. And If miley hasn’t figured this out by now… How hard could it be to resist the temptation to dance on a pole?? And why should anyone be tempted to anyway? Especially a girl who should think about her status as the “29th most influental person”?

Brett: Not really sure how it’s a low blow. I’m pointing out obvious flaws in your argument, it’s what I do. And that’s cool, but still, I think it’s an insult to anyone who has ever accomplished anything that is worthy of qualifying them for the reference “Renaissance (Wo)Man” to even suggest a hypocrite like Miley Cyrus is anywhere close to that status.

Also, it really doesn’t seem like a satire, especially because of the fact that you support her.

Finally, just let me say, I’m not attacking you personally on any of these comments (this goes for everybody). Sure, I’m blunt, and, frankly, mean, but that’s just me playing devil’s advocate. Sorry for any hurt feelings.

  8. Cam Colella Says:

Brett Hornung, you are a silly person indeed. See, I trusted you to leave subjectivity and objectivity out of it, as you clearly don’t understand the concept.

    Subjectivity: Opinion

    Objectivity: Fact

Words and phrases like “talent,” “beauty,” and “think of as…” all imply opinion (love the addition, by the way; and yes, that’s sarcastic).

Words and phrases like “nude,” “pole dance in front of teenagers,” “hypocrite,” and “not virgin,” are claims supported by evidence. Thus, fact.

So, really, it looks as if the tables are turned. My claims, being that she is a terrible role model, a hypocrite, and a promiscuous, misguided teen star, are supported by fact, while yours are supported by opinion, and… oh yeah, hormones. Obviously, some do not like her music, which is clear proof that not everybody shares the “objective” view of talent (and her voice is, for the most part, aided by technology; she’s also been blatantly caught lip-syncing, implying that even her producers don’t think that her voice is as good in real life as it is once it has been processed). Beauty, a measure of aesthetics (I sincerely hope that your freshman theology teacher did not completely fail you), is an inherently subjective measure, as people’s views and interpretations of beauty vary greatly. Finally, inspiration is a ridiculous interpretation of objective fact, as different people are obviously inspired by different things.

And please, don’t offer me your “forgiveness.” I don’t need it, don’t want it, and think it’s useless. Plus, it’s kind of pathetic that you feel personally insulted and need to forgive me because I “insulted” a celebrity that you like.

EDIT: Sorry, I worded the last part of the last paragraph incorrectly. It has been fixed.

    1. Among educated people who are the ones who should really be discussing this, I am using the common tongue. If you’re really so incompetent as to not understand words like “terrible,” “obviously,” and “interpretations,” see an English teacher at once. Or get a brain scan. Either or.

    2. No, not everybody believes in Christ. I don’t. And honestly, this argument is so ridiculous that I should delete your comment right now. You arrogant, ignorant, PATHETIC Christian (don’t take this the wrong way, I’m not anti-Christian, just anti-arrogant-Christian). I cannot believe that you would absolutely trash anything close to an educational discussion. Christ is absolutely NOT an objective fact. Read up on your religion buddy. Vatican II: Christianity cannot be proven logically; it can only be believed in. Open your eyes “young grasshoper,” your own leadership just contradicted you.
I cannot believe how arrogant you are. You assume that just because you believe in something that you claim is divinity, your view is automatically right. You have no proof of Christ ever living, OR being divine. Exactly none. Nill, Zilch. Zip. ZERO. The only testimony that you have from ANYBODY is from a group of highly devout followers (who, not unlike the Church, were more than willing to put a bit of spin on a few facts to make their view seem right) who wrote about their “messiah” DECADES later! The earliest recorded gospel is from 70 CE, written by Mark (13:2), who claimed that Jesus said that the world would end that very year. Pretty insubstantial evidence right there. Or is that too objective for you?
Finally, you still utterly fail to make the distinction between objective and subjective (see my essay posted on this site, titled “Absolutely Relative;” maybe it’ll help you grasp the concept a bit better). You assume the world revolves around you, and that what you believe is right. If you honestly want to devolve this conversation into a petty argument over religion, fine, I’ll deal. I prefer to stay topical though.

    3. Provide some substantial arguments, and then we’ll see.

    4. Arrogance, arrogance, arrogance. I have no need or want of your forgiveness. It makes no difference to me whether you like me or not. I think logically, swiftly, and without regrets. Your forgiveness means nothing to me, as I am not sorry. And I’m not Christian. Along with a substantial portion of the population of the world. Also, I have nothing to confess, as I’m not truly sorry.

    5. Grow up.

wow. WOW. Cameron you are a snob. just saying.

And I don’t really want to delve too deeply into this but Cameron you’re wrong about Non-Christian historical proof.
Jesus appears in the writings of Thallus, Pliny, Josephus, Seutonius, and especially Tacitus.
Here’s a little passage from Tactius about Jesus:
“Christus, from whom the name had its origin, suffered the extreme penalty during the reign of Tiberius at the hands of one of our procurators, Pontius Pilatus, and a most mischievous superstition, thus checked for the moment, again broke out not only in Judaea, the first source of the evil, but even in Rome, where all things hideous and shameful from every part of the world find their centre and become popular. ”

So you definitely can’t go as far to say “Exactly none. Nill, Zilch. Zip. ZERO”. Or at least it wouldn’t make sense especially since you think “logically, and swiftly”.

Gotta go with k-gibz on this one: you can’t say that there is no proof for Jesus’ existence. This article and posts in its defense are satirical, right? I mean, honestly we can all agree that today’s society’s standards for both music and film are the most…lacking, to put it nicely. To even put the likes of High School Musical 2 and Hannah Montana: It’s Complicated in the same paragraph as the word success is an insult to film itself. Also, I truly appreciate Jesus’ entrance into this argument. It’s a pleasure for his name to arise, seeing I don’t have to deal with it being shoved down my throat in each moment of my day. The only thing this topic is the epitome of is the human devolution into cavemen.

    Kevin:

    About those writings….

Thallus: Never says anything close to the word “Jesus,” never mentions a human incarnation of God.

    Pliny:
“I deem it a mark of human weakness to seek to discover the shape and form of God.
That that supreme being, whatever it be, pays heed to man’s affairs is a ridiculous notion.”
Pliny essentially rebukes the fact of a man-God. Pliny is a Deist, and (as the logical assumption would be) does not write anything about Christ.

Josephus: Insane. Also, his original work is lost. The first claim that Josephus wrote about “Jesus” was in 324 CE, when Eusebius wrote about Josephus, including an altered manuscript of Josephus’ (which he had deliberately forged to include this passage). The earliest translations or manuscripts that we have concerning this line are from the 11th Century. Thus, not reliable, and disproven.

Seutonius: “Chrestus,” as Suetonius spells it, is the correct Latin form of a true Greek name, so that some would say that it does not refer to Jesus Christ. Also, he writes about Jesus visiting Rome WHILE HE IS WRITING, which is 90-130 CE.

Tacitus: Probably your most valid point. However, it still won’t stand as historical proof. This is one reference in trillions. Also, it’s kind of a terrible point. Tacitus’ quote appears only in “his” “Annals.” I use quotation marks around “his” because it is disputed that these versions of “Annals” were not his. There is a long-standing theory, yet to be disproven, that Tacitus’ quote was an interpolation. Finally, Tacitus was known to borrow heavily from others, including Pliny. It is highly possible that he simply wrote it because Pliny talked about it.

Overall, I can claim that there is no evidence of Christ ever existing. All five cited sources are either terrible, or their original manuscripts have been tampered with. If Jesus was such an awesome guy, why is there only one possible historical record of him? Also, all of these sources were non-existant before 70 CE, thus validating my previous argument about timeliness. Regardless, even if you manage to convince anybody of this very shaky fact, remember, none of these quotes name Jesus as the Son of God. They simply say he was persecuted. Which, overall, really doesn’t matter, as we’re debating the credibility of the foundations of the religion. Which are bunk. So yes, I can say “Exactly none. Nill, Zilch. Zip. ZERO.”

See my above comments. I find it annoying when people disagree to disagree.

I disagree with things that I think are wrong. I don’t care how frivolous the topic is, and while I may be unnecessarily “parading” my opinion in front of others who don’t care, please remember why Dan, Nate, and I started this website. To express opinions, and to debate about them. I don’t care if people enjoy it, I don’t care what people think about it. If you don’t like it, nobody’s forcing you to read my comments. And stop disagreeing with me just to disagree, it’s rather obnoxious. See my comment on the Socialism article.

So basically, you’re disagreeing because you don’t like me. And you try to aggravate/provoke/annoy me by disagreeing with me. So let’s diagram this:

Disagreeing –> because you don’t like me –> so you disagree

So you’re disagreeing… To disagree. Also:

    1. Nobody is forcing you to read my comments.
    2. Nobody is forcing you to argue with me.
    3. Nobody cares what either of us think.
    4. I don’t think it’s obnoxious. It is, in fact, something I would do. So, essentially, you’re no better than me. Awww, that stinks.

If Steve is right, and Cameron is really deleting comments that make him look bad, then he should be promptly eliminated from editors-in-chief/Founders list. So far, Cameron, you have done little to truly further the success of the West Side Review, as your pugnacious nature and postings have deterred many more readers than they have attracted. Even if it is “your” website (and I would give about ninety percent of the credit of “Founder” to Nate), you have no right to alienate people unless you are the only person who has a stake or has put some effort into the success of the West Side Review. As a person who has put a good amount of time and thought writing an article and commenting on other articles, I do not appreciate what you have done, and I think (although I am not sure) that I vouch for several other people when I say this. If you are even compromising the beliefs and mission of the West Side Review by deleting other peoples’ comments, then you deserve to lose any priveleges you have within the West Side Review community.

P.S. If this message is deleted, you know what happened.

Ok, try putting yourself in Miley Cyrus’s shoes for a minute. If an ordinary high school student like most of us suddenly became a celebrity who was looked up to by millions of people, we probably wouldn’t dare to do anything offensive or inappropriate in front of our fans. For Miley, being famous is an everyday thing. I’m not justifying her suggestive behavior, I’m just saying that when you’re used to having your every action discussed on websites like this one, you most likely stop worrying so much about being a good role model. When you get ripped apart every day for meaningless things like what kind of outfit you are wearing, of course you just stop caring so much what people say about you. Still, as Spiderman would say, “With great power comes great responsibility.” Miley has the power to influence the behavior of her fans, and she has a responsibility to help shape them into moral citizens. If she can’t handle that responsibility, she she should stop singing.

I don’t think I need to mention the other aspect. However, Peereboom desires due credit. Also, not to call anyone out (although I have done that already), but where did Dan McCarthy go? An editor-in-chief with one comment? Dan, if you read this, I hope that you become more involved with “your” website.

Cam. Cam you are ridiculous (as my name clearly states.) You criticize Brett for spelling and grammar mistakes. First, this is not an essay that you have to hand in for your teacher. It is an online site for high school students to “To express opinions, and to debate about them.” Second, if you analyze your own comments, you will find some improper apostrophe usage, comma splices, and others… “Nobody’s Perfect,” as Miley would say.

Sorry I’ve been absent, you know, family issues and such.

Parkrangersteve12 – I’ve deleted no comments. We do, believe it or not, have an adult moderator with administrator status. Check with him. Yes, I like to talk. It’s part of the reason that we started a website that is supposed to encourage discussion of topics. “Mental masturbation,” as you so tactfully put it, if meant in the context of discussion and argumentation, is a good thing. Smoke detectors don’t work without a home security system. Free speech doesn’t mean you can say whatever you want, by the way. If you don’t believe me, go to a movie theater, stand up, and scream “fire.”

George – I’m not deleting comments. I’m not sure what you mean, though. You’re accusing me of trying to stop people from coming to this website, right? A website that is devoted solely to the expression of opinions, and discussion of those opinions. You’re attempting to get me to stop expressing my views because you dislike the way I present them. So, let me get this straight: You are defending the values of a website devoted to expression and discussion of opinions by stifling the voice of one of the biggest contributors to the comment sections on the articles on said website. And yes, I’ll take the stake of the website that’s due to me, as I have sufficiently contributed my views, corrections, moderation, and technical support to this website. I don’t care whether you accept my views or not, specifically when you attempt to stifle them. And we’ll leave stripping me of my responsibilities up to the actual staff and administration of the website, thanks. P.S. That message wasn’t deleted, because it wasn’t stupid.

Again, thanks for supporting the editors (I’m talking about your next comment, by the way) in administration of the website. At least we’re not all as blind to see that if there were no editors, there would be no website (I’ll get to you later, Brett). Yes, Nate is doing a fantastic job of editing articles and subsequently posting them for me to argue with (teehee), and I owe him much for that. As for Dan, though his voice isn’t as present on the website, it’s very much worth realizing that not everything to do with the website is as apparent as you would think that it is. Dan is very much involved, and has been a fantastic contributing member of the team since Day One.

Brennan – Yup, I made a mistake. Holy crap. No way. I guess all my arguments are bunk now, huh? Oh, wait…

    Kevin – Very good point.

Brett – Contributing and popular are two very different things. And the fact that you’ve written a lot doesn’t mean that people should blindly accept what you say. Everything needs moderation. The fact that you don’t know the meaning of the word fallacious and still attempt to use it is amusing to me. You’re going to protest the website? What the hell does that mean? You know, as soon as I saw the words “its perfect,” I realized that this was a joke. I didn’t find it amusing. Finally, if there were no Editors to begin with, you wouldn’t even be an author.

Jeeze, I get the feeling that I should start putting a disclaimer at the bottom of all of my posts that says:

“DISCLAIMER: The views expressed above in no way represent those of any other author/editor/reader of the website, the administration of the website, nor the webmaster. Furthermore, please chill out. It’s not a big deal. I’m here to argue. If you don’t want to argue, then don’t argue. But you’re not going to make me stop.”
